Skydancer for Flute and Acoustic Guitar, was commissioned by Lynne Plowmann and Sally Hillier in 1995, with funds from the Arts Council of Wales. At the time, I was reading about the White Skydancer/ Dakini * in a book called ‘The Rainbow of Liberated Energy by Ngakpa Chogyam.
Inspiration for this piece flowed at lightening speed. The flute and guitar parts blossomed and evolved into interesting dialogues and dances, both separately and together forming a giant mantra of some 12.13 minutes. A jazzy improvisational feel emerges as the guitar part evokes a feel of Django Rhienhart and the flute moves and shifts as it remaps its trajectory in glorious and transcendental ways.
This performance is a bootleg recorded on a portable cassette from the live premiere performance/ Norwegian Church /Cardiff on the 13 October 1995.
*’In Tibetan Buddhism, a dakini translates literally to “sky dancer”. She is a sacred female energy, priestess, or muse that represents the free, enlightened, and intuitive movement of consciousness. She acts as a guide to higher spiritual realms and embodied wisdom’
